More than 100 school and district leaders spent two days strengthening Bay County's emergency preparedness efforts during a comprehensive School Reunification Training hosted by Bay District Schools in partnership with the I Love U Guys Foundation.

The training, held July 22-23, provided administrators and district staff with the knowledge and hands-on experience needed to safely reunite students with their families following an emergency requiring an evacuation or relocation from campus. Participants learned the Foundation's Standard Reunification Method, a nationally recognized protocol used by thousands of school districts across the country.

The first day of training took place at Bay High School's Fine Arts Center, while the second day concluded with a large-scale reunification exercise at The Atlantis Center in Lynn Haven.

Approximately 40 schools, including Bay District Schools and local charter schools, participated in the exercise, allowing school leaders to practice reunification procedures in a realistic, collaborative setting. The hands-on simulation reinforced both on-site and off-site reunification processes and gave participants the opportunity to apply what they had learned in a controlled environment.

The training was made possible through a grant from the St. Joe Community Foundation, allowing Bay District Schools to bring the I Love U Guys Foundation to Bay County at no cost to the district.

"This training was another important investment in the safety of our students and staff," said Superintendent Mark McQueen. "While we hope we never have to implement these procedures, being prepared is one of the most important responsibilities we have. Our goal is to ensure every school has trained leaders who know exactly what to do if a reunification event ever becomes necessary."

Participants will now return to their schools and departments prepared to train additional staff, helping establish a consistent reunification process across Bay County schools.

The I Love U Guys Foundation developed the Standard Reunification Method following the tragic school shooting at Platte Canyon High School in Colorado in 2006. Today, the Foundation's protocols are widely regarded as the gold standard in school reunification planning and are used by thousands of school districts nationwide.
